No one plans to cancel, the same way no one buys health insurance because they are planning to get sick. Cancellation is one piece. The better reason is quieter: once you have left the country and put real money into the trip, you want help with the missed hotel night, the delayed bag, the storm at the connecting airport, the clinic bill you did not expect.
Here are our top 4 reasons for buying some coverage other than needing to cancel a trip last minute.
And not just in a "something came up and now we can't travel" way. More like your flight gets rerouted to another airport and now you'll miss your €600 hotel night in Venice, with all your luggage missing for four days.
This one's our favorite. Staffed with experienced pros for immediate support, anytime. Whether you've had a little (or big) medical mishap, lost your passport, or need help navigating a foreign legal system, the hotline is there wherever you are in the world — no matter the time zone or situation.
Premiums are based on age and the trip cost amount you insure, so you don't need to include, say, refundable airline tickets — but any dollar amount you might actually lose is worth protecting, especially on larger, higher-priced trips.
Ultimately, travel insurance is peace of mind — knowing you're financially protected and supported during unexpected events or emergencies, so you can explore the world with confidence wherever your adventures take you.
Get a quote
Quote through this page and you still get an advisor in your corner. We can help you choose what belongs in the quote, keep the policy documents close, and point you to the right Allianz assistance or claims channel if something goes sideways. Allianz is your insurer; the quote, certificate of insurance, and plan documents decide coverage and claims.
Before you skip it
Sometimes — a little. But almost every card travel benefit hides behind one word: secondary. It’s the part no one reads, and it changes everything.
What “secondary” means
It pays last. Only after your own insurance has paid or said no — and only for what’s left, up to the card’s limit.
Say you sprain an ankle abroad and visit a clinic. Here’s how the two play out:
With a card’s secondary coverage
You pay the clinic yourself, or get billed later.
You file first with your U.S. health plan — which usually doesn’t cover you abroad.
You wait for their written denial, and save every receipt.
You send that denial and the paperwork to the card — inside its deadline, often 60–90 days, or the claim is void.
The card reimburses what’s left, up to its limit.
With a primary travel plan
It just pays first.
From the first dollar — no other insurer to chase, no denial to collect. Often the clinic is paid directly through the 24-hour assistance line.
Allianz single-trip plans are primary for emergency medical.Secondary isn’t nothing — but it’s a top-up, not a safety net. It assumes you already have coverage that applies. Abroad, most U.S. health plans don’t — so “secondary” can mean fronting the whole bill and chasing a reimbursement that’s capped and slow.
Before you rely on your card, check one word in its benefits guide: primary or secondary? And find the claim deadline — missing it is the single most common reason these claims are denied.
Cost strategy
For Allianz single-trip plans that include trip cancellation or trip interruption, the quote is based mainly on two inputs: the traveler's age and the trip cost amount being insured. Destination generally does not change the premium. Once you understand that, the next question is which costs actually belong in that trip-cost number.
The input you control
Allianz says trip costs are pre-paid costs only. For cancellation benefits, the costs you usually need to insure are the non-refundable trip expenses you could actually lose if you cancel for a covered reason.
The strategy
Allianz says you may choose to insure only a portion of trip costs if you are willing to accept the risk. That can lower the quote, but it also means trip cancellation and trip interruption reimbursement is limited to the amount you insured.
Annual travel insurance
Allianz says AllTrips annual travel insurance plans are not priced by traveler age or trip cost. The cost is based on the plan selected and the maximum benefit limits, which can make annual coverage surprisingly practical for frequent travelers.
Important: only the quote, policy, and certificate of insurance determine what benefits, limits, exclusions, and eligibility rules apply. If you are relying on trip cancellation, trip interruption, Cancel Anytime, or a pre-existing-condition waiver, do not trim the insured trip cost without confirming how that affects the coverage.

Group Advantage is for groups of 10 or more and is quoted through us. Annual Premier, Executive, and Deluxe are a different product family for frequent travelers; exact annual benefit limits belong in the quote.
World Travel Protection and Latitude figures are confirmed against Allianz public plan pages and the Spellbound source ledger. Basic and Group Advantage figures are from the current Allianz plan materials in the local source ledger. State variations, sublimits, terms, conditions, and exclusions apply; the quote and certificate of insurance control.
Coverage breakdown
These are the reasons you can actually file a claim — to cancel before you go, to come home early, or for the everyday things that go wrong while you're traveling. (How much each one pays, and under which benefit, sits in Compare Allianz plans.) The bottom group is where travelers most often get caught out.
Covered — reasons you can file a claim
You, a companion, or a family member — cancel before you go, or come home early.
Treatment for a covered illness or injury, and evacuation home if it's needed.
An airline, cruise line, or tour operator goes out of business.
A storm, a hurricane warning, or a destination made uninhabitable.
You're ordered to leave your home or your destination.
Reimbursement to replace what you need when bags go missing.
Meals and a room while you wait — or when you miss a cruise or tour.
A subpoena, jury service, or a call to military or first-responder duty.
At your destination, or a traffic accident on the way to departure.
Including COVID-19, on plans that carry the Epidemic Coverage Endorsement.
Help and reimbursement to replace them so the trip can go on.
On the Latitude plan a few more count too: a business partner's illness, a caregiver's illness, and a veterinary emergency.
Not covered — where people get caught
A schedule conflict, pet emergency, or another non-covered reason belongs in the Cancel Anytime conversation, if the upgrade is available.
Standard plans pay only for their named, unforeseen reasons.
A storm, strike, or situation already in the news when you bought.
You didn't buy in time to earn the pre-existing waiver.
Losses from war, intoxication, illegal acts, or extreme sports without a rider.
Regular vs add-on
Allianz does not call this generic CFAR. Its upgrade is called Cancel Anytime, and the difference matters: standard coverage pays for named covered reasons; Cancel Anytime can add partial reimbursement for many non-covered, unforeseeable reasons when the quote and certificate allow it.
Standard coverage
Covers the named reasons in the plan document. This is usually the cleaner fit when the real risk is illness, a family emergency, severe weather, delay, or a covered supplier problem.
Allianz Cancel Anytime
Cancel Anytime can reimburse 80% of lost non-refundable trip cost if you cancel for almost any unforeseeable reason the plan does not already cover. It is not offered in every state, and it cannot be added late.
Accuracy note: Allianz public pages describe Cancel Anytime on consumer OneTrip plans. This guide also references the advisor World Travel Protection with Cancel Anytime plan in Spellbound's source ledger, where the upgrade version carries lower WTP trip-cost ceilings than standard World Travel Protection. The quote, state availability, and certificate of insurance control.
You are booking far out, the trip has meaningful non-refundable cost, and there is a real chance the reason you cancel will fall outside the standard list. The tradeoff is not small: on the advisor World Travel Protection version we reviewed, the Cancel Anytime version lowers the WTP trip-cost ceiling.
If the concern is illness, hospitalization in the family, severe weather, delays, or a covered supplier failure, standard coverage is usually the cleaner tool. It can reimburse up to 100% for covered reasons, subject to the selected plan.
The cheat sheet
No, not always. A quick weekend getaway up the coast doesn't carry the same financial risk as a big-ticket family trip — one with lots of moving parts, non-refundable nights, and a potential domino effect if even one thing slips. But if your trip has real non-refundable cost, or you're leaving the country — yes.
Five minutes, no account, no pressure.
Some trips have to be cancelled or cut short — and you shouldn't lose your non-refundable payments when they are.
From a bug picked up in transit to something more serious, the team helps you find quality care nearby and covers what's eligible.
Many U.S. plans — Medicare and Medicaid included — don't cover you abroad. Why carry that risk alone?
Left a prescription at home? The assistance team helps you locate a pharmacy and replace it, wherever you are.
Reimbursement to replace what you need when bags are delayed, damaged or stolen — so you can carry on.
If a travel supplier ceases operations, you're far less likely to pay for an experience you'll never have.
In an emergency an airline can hand you a voucher instead of your money back. Insurance gives you control over Plan B.
A covered delay can mean reimbursement for rebooking fees, meals and accommodation while you wait, or when you miss a connection.
Even the free coverage on a card is rarely as extensive as a proper travel-insurance plan.
The free Allianz TravelSmart app puts your policy, claims, flight tracking and one-touch emergency assistance in your pocket.
The most common issue
Travel delay is not only an overnight hotel after a cancelled flight. On World Travel Protection, the benefit can apply after a covered delay of five or more hours; on Latitude, the threshold is three hours.
When the plan includes SmartBenefits, eligible monitored-flight delays can use a fixed $100 payment, and some baggage-delay benefits can use a no-receipts fixed-payment route with proof of a covered delay.
If a covered delay makes you miss a cruise or tour departure, trip-delay benefits may help with reasonable transportation expenses to catch up with the trip, subject to the selected plan.
World Travel Protection lists up to $500 for baggage delay after 12 hours. Latitude lists up to $600 after 6 hours. The quote and certificate decide the exact benefit.
World Travel Protection lists up to $2,500 for baggage loss or damage, with a $500 high-value-item sublimit. Latitude lists up to $2,000, with a $1,000 high-value-item sublimit.

Timing
Travel insurance isn't only about what you buy — it's about when. A few benefits are time-sensitive, and buying at the right moment is what keeps them on the table.

As soon as you have a deposit down
You don't have to insure the whole trip at once. Insure the deposit now and add costs as they become non-refundable — buying early is what keeps the time-sensitive benefits available.
On or before your final payment
On World Travel Protection and Latitude, the pre-existing-condition waiver holds as long as you buy on or before your supplier's final payment date — not within 14 days of the deposit. It's a real advantage for anyone managing a health condition.
Within 14 days of first payment
Supplier-financial-default coverage on World Travel Protection, and the Cancel Anytime upgrade, must be purchased within 14 days of your initial trip payment. Miss the window and they're off the table.
There's a safety net
Most plans include a review period (about 15 days) to cancel for a full refund if you change your mind before you travel and haven't filed a claim. You're covered from day one, with room to reconsider.
In practice
Travel insurance gets easier to understand when you stop talking in hypotheticals. These are the situations we're actually asked about.
A covered illness in an immediate family member is a covered reason for trip cancellation on every plan we place. Prepaid, non-refundable deposits — villa, guides, internal flights — are reimbursed up to the insured trip cost.
On World Travel Protection, emergency medical is $50,000, primary, with no deductible — it pays first, so you're not fronting the bill and chasing your health insurer from a clinic abroad (Latitude carries $100,000). Emergency transportation up to $1,000,000 covers a medically necessary evacuation, and trip interruption picks up the unused nights and the flight home at up to 150% of trip cost.
World Travel Protection pays travel delay after 5 hours; Latitude after only 3. Both reimburse up to $200 per person per day, and SmartBenefits can issue $100 a day proactively on monitored flights without a receipt. If the delay makes you miss a cruise or tour departure, the daily cap comes off.
This is the reason we place these plans rather than the retail ones. On World Travel Protection and Latitude, the pre-existing-condition waiver holds as long as you buy on or before your supplier's final payment date — not within 14 days of the deposit. So you can insure the deposit now, add costs as you pay them, and keep the waiver.
Not a covered reason under a standard plan unless the certificate specifically says it is. That is the kind of gap Cancel Anytime is built for, when available: 80% reimbursement for many unforeseeable, non-covered reasons. But it must be bought within the required window, public Allianz guidance adds a 30-days-before-trip requirement, and the advisor World Travel Protection with Cancel Anytime version has lower WTP trip-cost ceilings than standard World Travel Protection.
Then the pre-existing-to-final-payment advantage collapses into a single day, and the policy has to be sold that day to preserve it. We use the 15-day review period to make that safe: you're covered from the outset, and you can still cancel for a full refund within the window if you change your mind.
